Betrayal

Mike Nichols directs Daniel Craig & Rachel Weisz in Betrayal

Best hurry because this Harold Pinter drama closes on Sunday January 5, 2014.

Betrayal is at the beautiful old Ethel Barrymore Theatre on West 47th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue. You’ll want to wear your best going-to theater outfit. (If you need expert help, just call Fashion Award Cleaners.)

Betrayal has been called Harold Pinter’s master work. The plot comes out backwards as it explores a secret love affair and its effects: the emotional world of betrayal that destroys a marriage and sabotages a friendship. The acting is exceptional.

Don’t miss it. More info here: http://www.playbill.com/events/event_detail/25481-Betrayal-at-Ethel-Barrymore-Theatre.

A New Nutcracker?

nutcracker
Yes, indeed, and, apparently it’s terrific. Even the critics love it.

Robert Gottlieb of The New York Observer wrote: “An appealing surprise turned up at the small but always intelligent and appealing New York Theatre Ballet…. Keith Michael has replaced his own Nutcracker, performed from 1985-2010, with a new version and it’s a honey…It’s completely ingenious the way he deploys the pretty cut-out scenery (by Gillian Bradshaw-Smith) and the equally charming costumes (by Sylvia Taalsohn Nolan), and it’s extraordinary the way he achieves so much with so small an ensemble. What’s more, the choreography is musical and inventive-and fun. The atmosphere is relaxed and rowdy, the experience a happy one.”

Must See

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier At the Brooklyn Museum

The only East Coast showing of this first ever international exhibition dedicated to the groundbreaking French couturier.

It’s a multimedia thing organized around the seven themes of Gaultier’s development since he emerged as a designer in the 1970s.

You’ll see 140 or so haute couture and prêt-à-porter ensembles, many on high tech mannequins with high-definition AV “faces” you have to see to believe.

What else? Lots of accessories, sketches, stage costumes, excerpts from films, and documentation of runway shows, concerts, and dance performances, as well as visual art from the photographers and artists who stepped into Gaultier’s world.

It’s all fascinating, especially if you’re as interested in beautiful clothing as we are here at Fashion Award Cleaners. The show closes on February 23. Ticket info here: Purchase Tickets

Do good, feel good, help out.

Who in New York has spare time these days, or ever, now that we think about it? Nobody, that’s who and that’s why we are so impressed at how many of our Fashion Award Cleaners customers manage to make time in their busy schedules to so many wonderful organizations.

Most of the year, just sending a check will get the job done, but at this time of year showing up in person to lend a hand can be even more important when food charities feed the hungry. Here are just three of the many groups who need your help:

Yorkville Common Pantry
The Yorkville Common Pantry has been helping hungry New Yorkers for more than three decades. On an average weekday, the pantry, which pays special attention to nutrition and strives to make meals as healthy as possible, serves dinner to around 350 people, so help is needed to serve food and hand out groceries from the pantry.
8 East 109th St., between Fifth and Madison Avenues (212-410-2264)

God’s Love We Deliver
If you have a car, or the ability to rent one for a few hours, sign up at to help God’s Love We Deliver to transport baskets of food to people’s homes. Drivers are needed to deliver specially-decorated gift baskets, plus the regular three course meal, to more than 1,500 homebound New Yorkers. All you need is a car and knowledge of the city streets or Google maps.

City Harvest
Help out by donating a box of canned goods at one of the many participating locations: any FDNY or NYPD station, any New York City Modell’s Sporting Goods store or MCU branch locations, or the Daily News building lobby at 4 New York Plaza. Find a list of the most needed items here. City Harvest also lists numerous other ways to help .

Venetian Glass by Carlo Scarpa At The Metropolitan Museum until early spring

16_Carla_Scarpa_Venetian_Glass
Last year, a version of this wonderful exhibit was a huge hit in Italy. It opened at the Met on November 5 and runs through March 2 of next year.

Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) was actually an architect who, for one reason or another, mostly because he was a rebel, wound up working with the legendary Paoli Venini on the glass-making island of Murano designing exquisite and exciting glassware.

New York Magazine describes the show as “Yummy, bright hand-blown glass by a mid-century master, made for the Venini company between 1932 and 1947. The sort of show that makes you want to go home and hit eBay.”

The Park Avenue Garage Holiday Sale Returns

The-Park-Avenue-Garage-Holiday-Sale
There’s always been something fascinating about the concept of a garage sale for luxury items. You may not find a used Bentley or a slightly dusty unframed Basquiat, but you will find the exotic and precious on four floors of New York’s ultimate holiday “pop-up” luxury fashion and home sale.

The Park Avenue Garage Holiday Sale is back. But hurry. It closes on November 23

Artfully arranged, one-of-a-kind discounted luxury merchandise gathered from the personal collections, showrooms, stores and closets of New York’s top designers, artists, stylists and socialites and showcased in a gorgeous midtown townhouse at 10 West 56th Street. So it’s a few blocks from Park, no biggie.
